Use Canva AI to Create Patient Education Handouts
What This Does
Canva's Magic Write and AI design tools let you create professional, visually clear patient education handouts in minutes — no graphic design experience needed.
Before You Start
- Free Canva account at canva.com (the free tier includes Magic Write)
- You know what procedure or topic the handout will cover
- Have your department name/logo if you want branded materials (optional)
Steps
1. Start a new design
Go to canva.com, log in, and click "Create a design". In the search bar, type "flyer" and select a Letter (8.5 x 11) portrait flyer template. Pick any simple, clean template — you'll replace the text.
What you should see: A visual template with placeholder text and images opens in the Canva editor.
2. Open Magic Write
Click on any text block in the template, then look for the purple sparkle icon (✦) that appears in the text toolbar. Click it to open Magic Write.
Troubleshooting: If you don't see the sparkle icon, click the text box first so it's selected, then look again in the toolbar above the text.
3. Tell Magic Write what you need
In the Magic Write text box, type your request:
Write a short patient preparation guide for [procedure]. Include what to do the night before, what to bring, what to expect during the procedure, and who to call with questions. Use simple, friendly language.
Click "Generate" — Magic Write will replace the placeholder text with your content.
4. Adjust the design
- Replace any stock photos with relevant Canva images: click a photo → "Replace" → search "medical imaging" or "hospital"
- Resize text if needed: select text and drag the font size handle
- Change colors to match your department's palette: click a colored element → color picker
5. Download and print
Go to Share → Download → PDF Print for a print-ready file, or PDF Standard for email.
Real Example
Scenario: Your CT department gets constant no-show calls because patients don't understand the contrast prep instructions. You want a clear, visual one-pager patients get at scheduling.
What you type in Magic Write: "Write a patient preparation guide for a CT scan with IV contrast. Include: nothing to eat 4 hours before, drink water, wear comfortable loose clothing, tell us about kidney problems or allergies, what happens during the scan. Use bullet points and friendly language."
What you get: A well-organized set of bullet points that fits on a half-page, leaving room for visual elements. Add a simple icon for each step and you have a professional handout in 20 minutes.
Tips
- Use Canva's "Text to Image" AI to generate relevant illustrations if you need custom visuals
- Create a template with your department's logo and color scheme once, then reuse it for all future handouts
- The free Canva tier includes Magic Write with a limited number of uses per month — Pro ($15/mo) removes that limit
Tool interfaces change — if Magic Write has moved, look for similar AI/sparkle icons in the text toolbar or the left sidebar.
